It is subject to standards that evolve with new technologies, whether in welding or even in some industries.

Welded joints are the most delicate part of metal structures. The weld seam must ensure the continuity of the material in its mechanical and metallurgical characteristics. Highly stressed joints, such as pressure vessels like SpaceX rockets, are calculated with a weld safety factor of up to 1.66. This means that, for a 10mm thick wall that would be perfectly resistant to stresses, and provided that the weld is 100% checked by X-ray, the design office will adopt a thickness of 10 x 1.66 = 16.6mm.
